Film Review: The Finest Hours

I've wanted to see this film since it first came out but I've been so busy the past couple of weeks that I haven't had the time. Finally, this past weekend I got around to seeing it!

I love that it is based on a true story and I was surprised to see that it was Disney at the end of the trailer the first time I watched it. This looks like the sort of film I would love, so we went along to see it.

The stars of this film were truly brilliant in their roles. I'm a huge Chris Pine fan and I loved Holliday Grainger in Cinderella as one of the stepsisters. Casey Affleck, Ben Foster and Eric Bana were also great. There is a scene between Eric's character and Holliday's when she confronts him at the lifeguard station. They are both brilliant.

The story was great - obviously, as it was a true story so it had to be good enough to be made into a film - with the oil tanker splitting completely in two and Chris Pine's character being a lifeguard, is sent out in poor weather conditions to try and find out what has happened and whether there is any survivors on board. Again, you know I don't like to spoil the films full plot and the outcome of a movie, so I'll leave it at that.

I would rate this film as:

I wanted to give this film more, I desperately did, but I think I had set myself up to love it so much that I ended up a little disappointed. I hate to say that because I really did like it, but it just wasn't all I wished it would be. I'm so sad to say it.

Saying the above really makes it sound like I didn't enjoy it, but I truly did. It's just when I compared it to other films I've seen this year already and what I was expecting from it, I had to give it three.

Let me know what you thought of this movie if you've seen it. My social media accounts are listed below, or you can leave a comment here:

Week 7 & 8: Tone It Up 2016 Challenge

So here are my updates from the final fortnight of the 2016 TIU challenge. Although I felt I'd started to slack a little bit here and there when things like uni work and wedding planning, I still managed to make time for even the shortest workout that made me feel so much better afterwards.

Here is my last post for this New Year challenge! Also, I just want to apologise for the repeated photos from my past three check in posts on this challenge. I've been so busy that I haven't had time to take new photos these past two weeks.

Day 43: I did the Bodyweight HIIT first thing this morning and then completed Burn It Up in the afternoon when I got home from work.

Day 44: Today I did the new band routine and followed it up with the Total Body Tone Up (this is still one of my favourites from this series!)

Day 45: I kept it simple today with an hour of pilates using a couple of videos from YouTube.

Day 46: I did my favourite Kettle Booty workout today, along with Toned Arms.

Day 47: I started my day with yoga this morning. I used to really dislike the thought of yoga, and when I finally tried it I didn't mind it but at the same time I didn't love it. But doing this challenge has definitely made me love it!

Day 48: I did Burn It Up again today (I can't get enough of this new HIIT workout). I felt so much better after doing this in the morning before a busy day of wedding preparation.

Day 49: It's Sunday! I did 10k today which was a challenge for me, but I did it. I did intervals of running and walking because I'm still getting used to the whole running thing.

Day 50: The band routine was my morning workout today, and then I did some yoga in the evening before bed.

Day 51: 45 minutes of dance this afternoon (in my living room to my workout playlist) and then the new ball routine. I think mine may have a slow puncture as every time I pump it up, it goes back down within 24 hours!

Day 52: It was Toned Arms this morning, followed by 30 minutes of circuits in my living room for some cardio, and then Kettle Booty (just because it's my favourite!)

Day 53: I am so, so busy! But I managed to fit in the Burn It Up routine and then some yoga in the evening.

Day 54: It's HIIT time! I did the HIITy Bitty Workout and then used the foam roller, which was well deserved!

Day 55: For my workout today I did some yoga, before doing some more jobs for the wedding.

Day 56: The final day, and I did my favourite two workouts... If you've been reading my posts then I bet you can guess... Kettle Booty and Total Body Tone Up!

So we're done, and I can't tell you how much better I feel after following this programme. It was free - which was a great bonus - and I really felt it working. It was a fantastic journey that I will definitely continue. I probably won't keep up the fortnightly posts about my workouts and progress because it gets a bit repetitive, but I will occasionally post about anything new and exciting from Tone It Up, especially when they start a new challenge such as their Bikini Series.

If you followed the TIU challenge then well done, and if not then I hope you can take some inspiration from how much I have enjoyed it and how I was able to fit it in on busy days, and maybe you can try it too.

Film Review: How To Be Single

I'd been looking forward to seeing this film for so long, since I first saw the trailer. I am a huge fan of Rebel Wilson and that was what made me want to see it so badly. I also love Leslie Mann. Also, it might just be me that thought it but I honestly thought Dakota Johnson was Benedict Cumberbatch's wife, Sophie. If you don't know what she looks like click here and see how similar they look!

Anyway, back to the film...

I saw this film on Valentine's Day with Clay, which may sound odd at first that we went as a couple to see a film that is about being single, but we decided to go for it because it was showing advanced previews on Valentine's Day (I know the image at the top of my post says 'February 12' but the UK doesn't get this film until 19 February).

I must start by saying I was a little disappointed with the amount of screen time that Rebel had, because I expected to be seeing her a lot more than we actually do. I assumed she would be going everywhere Dakota's character did, but she wasn't. Although when she was around it was very funny.

There were some really funny moments in this movie, although quite a few of them had already been shown in the trailers. It was a typical girly film for Valentine's Day. In case you were interested in Clay's opinion, he liked it but it wasn't his kind of movie and wasn't overly fussed. It's definitely one I would like to add to my collection of more girly films when it comes out on DVD.

I would give this film:

3 of the stars are for the actual film, it would have been 4 had there been a bit more Rebel Wilson. However, this film spoke to me so much as a woman. Even though I'm engaged and getting married later this year I still loved the message this film gave out to women. It's empowering, as if it's saying everyone will find someone eventually, but don't forget to take that time when you're single to be yourself and learn to love being on your own and do the things that you want to do while you have the time. It shows girl power both through friendship - like the one between Dakota and Rebel in this film - but also standing alone as a woman who is strong and capable. So I've added an extra star purely for the impression it left on me for that message.

Film Review: Deadpool

I saw this movie last Thursday but I have only just gotten around to writing the review! I've been so busy but now it's half term and I have a week off of work, I have a little more spare time (I say a little more because I'm still studying and planning the wedding, etc.)

So I was so excited to see this film that I was gutted when I found out Clay couldn't go on opening night. I always go to a Marvel film on opening night, I can't remember the last one I missed opening night of! I couldn't go without him so I made sure to get to it the next day.

I like that this story started from the beginning of where Deadpool came from and that it kept its links to X-Men. Marvel films have definitely been getting more humourous lately, with Guardians of the Galaxy being the big comical one, and this one was also funny. However, it was certainly a very different kind of humour. It was darker and more twisted, but I expected that. There were a couple of moments where I was laughing so much that I cried, but unfortunately our cinematic experience was completely ruined by the man who was sat two seats down from us. He laughed forcefully and loudly at least every three minutes, most of the moments he laughed at were only mildly funny too. He then continued to talk loudly to his wife afterwards, explaining why he was laughing (she looked like she'd have rather been anywhere else!) To make it even worse his explanations contained a lot of swear words that he continuously used at an intense volume. So many people tried to make a point that he was annoying them, without actually saying anything because to be fair he looked a little scary, but he carried on for the full 108-minute duration of the movie.

I think I would have to see it again to be able to fully appreciate it, but at the same time it isn't a film that I actually feel the need to run and see again. With most Marvel films I have been to see it opening night with Clay and then again the next day with my Dad (I've done this with Thor: The Dark World, Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Age of Ultron).

It was a good film and I had a good laugh and enjoyed the action. The way the fighting is shown is incredible and there were so many quick lines that you could miss if you're not on the ball with it (look out for the ones about Liam Neeson, David Beckham and references to other Marvel movies such as X-Men and Avengers).

I would rate this film as:

If you're a Marvel fan or like action movies then I thoroughly recommend this!

Week 5 & 6: Tone It Up 2016 Challenge

Here is my third fortnightly update for the Tone It Up 2006 Challenge. There's only two weeks left of this challenge now. So, let's just jump right into it...

Day 29: Today I did the Kettletoning routine, which is a longer video involving toning moves using a kettlebell and yoga moves too.

Day 30: I completed the new HIIT workout - Burn It Up - twice through. This is my new favourite HIIT routine.

Day 31: I did 45 minutes of dance aerobics and then the Love Your Legs & Booty routine.

Day 32: Today was arms and abs day with the Toned Arms routine and the Toned & Sexy Abs workout.

Day 33: I worked my whole body today with the Burn It Up HIIT routine for a second time this week, followed by Total Body Tone Up.

Day 34: Today I was meant to go to a class, but because I was running errands for a birthday lunch that was happening the following day and sorting out a few bits and pieces for mine and Clay's wedding, so I did an hour workout at home. I followed a workout DVD (The Only Way Is Essex - The Essexercise Workout) and did 20 minutes of dance, 20 minutes of boxing and 20 minutes of toning.

Day 35: I did the Total Body Bliss routine three times through and managed to fit in a quick 2 miles before going off to a birthday lunch (that I was running around for the day before). It was also the SuperBowl 50 but being in the UK meant that I couldn't watch all of it because it didn't start here until 11.30PM. I had work the next day too, so I couldn't sit and watch it whilst enjoying the yummy TIU recipes!

Day 36: HIITy Bitty Bikini was my booty call this morning, followed by some yoga in the evening.

Day 37: I completed the new Total Toner routine and did half an hour of dance, following a few Zumba routines from YouTube.

Day 38: Today I did my favourite HIIT routine, Burn It Up, twice through. I felt the burn again with this one, it's so worth doing!

Day 39: I did the Kettle Booty workout (another favourite of mine) and paired it with a 30 minute Ab Attack class online. Plus, how cool is it that 'Tone It Up' commented on my check-in!

Day 40: I did an online yoga class followed by a relaxing evening in the bath with my favourite 'Intergalactic' Lush bath bomb and a glass of wine, watching my favourite beauty YouTubers (see below)

Day 41: We had a wedding workshop at the church this morning so I pushed my workout back to the afternoon, completing the Love Your Total Body routine twice through.

Day 42: Happy Valentine's Day! A 4 mile walk this morning followed by a TIU pancake breakfast. We then had date night and went to the cinema and out for Mexican food.

Only two weeks left, let's make them count!

Love Is In The Air: Valentine's Makeup Looks

I went through all of my favourite makeup YouTubers and have found my ten favourite Valentine's-inspired makeup looks created by them (most of them are new for this year, a couple are from last year). They aren't in any particular order either. So, here are my top ten:

I love Carli Bybel's YouTube channel, and both of these looks featured in this year's Valentine's tutorial are stunning. If I had to choose I'd go with the first look, but that's because I love a pink lip like this.

Everyone knows Zoella (she hit 10 million YouTube followers this past week - how amazing is that?!) and she did a great job with this classic Valentine's look of sleek black eyeliner and a red lip.

Amanda Ensing does some amazing, dramatic makeup looks, and her Valentine's tutorial this year was no exception. A real black smokey eye with a nude lip is perfect for those brave enough to try it.

Jaclyn Hill is another YouTube classic when it comes to makeup, and this soft look would look amazing on those just starting out with makeup and wanting a more glowy, pink, simplistic look.

I fell in love with Nikki Tutorials when I saw her 'The Power of Makeup' video. This year her makeup video for Valentine's features a signature red lip and a lined eye with a difference.

Tanya Burr did a short 'Get Read With Me' style video for this Valentine's Day. It's very natural and pretty and is one that everyone would be able to follow easily.

Batalash Beauty is a new YouTube find for me this month and I am already in love. Both the hair and the makeup in this video are stunning. This is one that I might recreate for my Valentine's date night. (This is a bit of a joke video - in terms of what she says - but the makeup is still beautiful!)

This video by Jackie Wyers includes makeup, hair and outfit inspiration. This makeup is very girly and pink and would be perfect for those of you who are going out with the girls this Valentine's Day instead of a date.

The stunning Australian beauty Lauren Curtis is another YouTube must if you love makeup tutorials. This is her video from 2015, but you can find this year's one here. I just love this softness and simplicity of this one.

This video by Casey Holmes (my ultimate favourite makeup YouTuber) wasn't actually posted as a Valentine's Day tutorial, but I love it too much to leave it out. This is another one I'm tempted to try out on Valentine's Day for mine and Clay's date night, but I just can't choose! There's too many pretty looks!

I'd love to hear what makeup look is your favourite, or if you have any other makeup looks that you might be try out this Valentine's Day. Enjoy whatever you're doing, whether you're single and loving it, going on a date with your man or having a girl group date!
