The Global Goals: 1. No Poverty

End poverty in all its forms everywhere.

We are not a generation of bystanders, we are global citizens.

Global Goals first goal is to eradicate poverty by 2030. This number is determined by the amount of people living on less than £1 a day.

A couple of years ago I completed the Live Below the Line challenge and lived on £1 a day for 5 days, so I can personally tell you how difficult it was to give up drinking tea and coffee, and those food items that we would normally just pick up or grab out of the cupboard. I lived on porridge made with water instead of milk, plain gnocchi, and plain boiled rice with half a jar of sauce everyday. On a couple of days I could afford an apple. I couldn't imagine living like that all the time, but there are people out there who do!

Actress Kate Winslet has chosen goal 1 to support, and has promoted her choice with the popular hand selfie.

Here are the targets set out for goal 1:
  • Eradicate extreme poverty (people living on less than $1.25/£1 a day)
  • Reduce at least by half the proportion of people living in poverty in all its dimensions
  • Implement social protection systems and measures for all, and achieve substantial coverage of the poor and the vulnerable
  • Ensure that all men and women have equal rights to economic resources, as well as access to basic services, ownership, and control over land and other forms of property, inheritance, natural resources, appropriate new technology, and financial services
  • Build the resilience of the poor and those in vulnerable situations, and reduce their exposure to climate-related extreme events and other economic, social and environmental shocks and disasters

By 2030 we may not have to imagine a world without poverty, because it could be a real possibility in fifteen years time.

Is goal 1 your chosen goal? How are you supporting this goal and raising awareness?
